Abstract

The invasion of cancer cells is an important and characteristic step of cancerous metastasis. In the present study, the action of coffee extract and its components on the invasion of cancer cells was studied by means of co-culture system of AH109A, a rat ascites hepatoma cell line, with mesentery-derived mesothelial cells. Coffee extract was found to dose-dependently suppress the invasion of AH109A cells. Rats were given oral intubation of coffee extract, blood was taken at appropriate time intervals and serum was prepared. Coffee-loaded rat serum also suppressed the invasion, suggesting that effective component(s) in coffee could be absorbed from the guts. Caffeic acid, a known component in coffee, was capable of suppressing the invasion of AH109A cells. Caffeic acid-loaded rat serum also showed a suppressive effect on the invasion, indicating that caffeic acid is one of effective components in coffee and absorbable across the guts.
