Abstract

It is obvious that for many people and organizations germ-line gene therapy is a taboo. In a survey of national, scientific, and bioethical commissions and bodies, Maurice de Wachter concludes: “If one assumes that such reports, recommendation and guidelines reflect society’s opinion on the matter, we must conclude that the rather general approval which somatic cell gene therapy receives does not exist regarding germ-line therapy” (de Wachter, p. 169). One can ask: Why the difference?
