Abstract

While the pain of herpes zoster usually disappears with or shortly after the healing of the skin lesions, the most common (and dreaded) complication of the disease is persistent pain, termed post-herpetic neuralgia. Post-herpetic neuralgia can vary in degree from a mild, bothersome discomfort to severely debilitating and agonizing pain. Severe postherpetic neuralgia, most frequently described as a burning pain, is unique in that it may occur spontaneously and continuously without stimulation, though it is exacerbated by light tough and/or temperature changes. Post- herpetic neuralgia produces significant physical, mental, and emotional incapacitation, and is associated with a high rate of drug addiction and suicide (1).
