Abstract

Age-related maculopathy (ARM) is the leading cause of visual loss among elderly people in Western countries1. Of all cases of severe visual loss due to ARM, the vast majority are caused by exudative/neovascular complications2. The Macular Photocoagulation Study Group (MPS) demonstrated that laser photocoagulation reduced or delayed severe visual loss in eyes with classic choroidal neovascularization secondary to ARM3. However, only a minority of the patients with exudative lesions are eligible for laser photocoagulation therapy4, and recurrences are common5.
