Abstract

The term ‘serous detachment’ implies that subretinal fluid is proteinaceous. However, there has been little direct data on the movement of protein in or out of the subretinal space. This report summarizes recent experiments from our laboratory which investigated this issue and sought to clarify the role of protein in serous detachment in man1–5. These experiments also examine the effects of vitreous within the subretinal space, as may occur in rhegmatogenous detachment, and the source of protein when serous detachments form after focal ischaemia or toxic damage to the RPE and choroid.
