Abstract
Conjunctivitis, keratitis actinica, retinal damage1, and cataract formation2 are consequences of excessive UV irradiation. As catalase activity has been found to be reduced in cataractuous lenses3, we suggested a protective effect for catalase against UV irradiation. Using blue light of 400 nm, Radimeier proved this in cultures of bovine lens epithelium4,5 (Fig. 1). Showing that UV damage is a result of H2O2 stress. It is important determine whether addition of a 0.36% catalase solution can protect lens epithelial cells against morphological alterations and apoptosis by UV-A also. It remains unknown, whether indirect as well as direct irradiation can cause cell damage.
