Abstract

Pollutants in water can be classified as:

  • • Suspended solids — floating debris, settleable sediment or buoyant algae.

  • • a quality unrelated necessarily to solids, e.g. temperature, acidity, colour, odour or taste. the latter are often associated with matter in the water, however.

  • • Dissolved chemicals — many cations, anions, with different effects, e.g. on health, equipment or toxicity.

  • • Bacteria, pathogens, viruses, organic micropollutants.
