Abstract
Unilever has been involved in environmental studies for its food products for eight years. During that period life cycle assessment (LCA) has proven to be a handy tool. A number of useful observations have been made in attempting to use the outcome of such studies for environmental product improvement. These include i) in product development trade-offs between environmental improvements and other product characteristics need to be made; ii) functional units cannot always be unambiguously defined; iii) it is advantageous when LCA-studies are conducted by the industries involved; iv) sometimes there is only a limited choice for alternatives; and v) direct interactions between customer and producer is most effective in product improvement processes.
