Abstract

North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean and Black Sea are semienclosed, peripheral seas of the Atlantic. Their human impact, degradation of ecosystems, losses of diversity and potential of biological productivity are similar yet with clear-cut differences (Table 1). We start with a situation analysis of the three first-mentioned seas. A derivation of necessary ecological policies and reassures at sea, along the coastline and in the catchment areas of the mainland follows. The conference will show if the Black Sea and its catchment area are given the same prerequisites to derive from them a similar catalogue of reassures for nature and environmental conservation as the one which already exists for North Sea and Baltic Sea.
