Abstract
The available seismic data disprove the concept that tectonic plates are tectonically passive regions. Massive rebound, and anomalously high formation pressures displayed in oil and gas fields, are undoubtedly connected with high tectonic stresses which must exceed lithostatic and hydrostatic stresses by a large factor. Within the plate regions, beyond activation zones (plate boundaries), considerable tectonic stresses associated with seismic zones are known practically all over the continents.
