Abstract
The disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) in deep geological formations is now considered by the international community as the ultimate stage in the optimum solution to the general problem of radioactive waste management, although other, more hypothetical, possibilities, (e.g. transmutation, space disposal) have been considered.
