The introductory contribution in this volume presents a broad view on the greenhouse effect and other reasons why we in Europe have to change dramatically our use of energy1. Especially the consumption of electricity should be kept in mind, since it constitutes the most polluting form of secondary energy, when produced from the presently most widespread primary energy sources.
