Abstract

Since 1989 ONERA participates to different projects concerning satellite constellations, either for French Ministry of Defence, or for CNES or ESA. In order to analyse constellation performance, we developed specific softwares dealing with the global problem of constellation design.

Four tools are presented in this paper dedicated to various aspects of the constellation design process.

  • Initial determination of the orbital parameters of the constellation: ONERA developed a global optimisation based on Adaptive Random Search,

  • Constellation deployment feasibility: ONERA’s software has the capability to optimise launch and station acquisition of multiple satellites,

  • Constellation evolution: it is possible to take into account long term evolution of satellites and its effect on system performance,

  • Navigation system accurate simulation: This last tool is specifically devoted to navigation system performance analysis. It allows a very fine modelling of the whole system including space, ground and user segments. It can analyse such systems in terms of availability, accuracy and integrity.

All these tools are described in this paper and for each one an example of results is given and discussed.
