Abstract

Some examples of the detrimental consequences of frictional instabilities such as stick slip and oscillations include annoying noises, positioning errors, poor surface roughness in machined materials, and irregular drug delivery. The causes of frictional instabilities are the negative slope of the friction-relative velocity curve, frictional coupling of two or more motions which have natural frequencies near each other, and lubricants which can crystallize. Several cures for instabilities such as stiffening the components of the system, adding damping, selecting materials with positive slopes of the friction-velocity curve, and separating the natural frequencies of the vibration modes are suggested.
