Abstract

The dynamics of a pair of parallel counter-rotating vortices has been the object of a large number of studies in the last three decades. The continued interest in this flow is, to a great extent, due to its relevance to the problem of aircraft trailing wakes, whose far field is primarily composed of such a pair. Due to their strength and longevity, these vortices can be dangerous to other aircraft that follow, because of the rolling moment they induce. In addition, the counter-rotating vortex pair represents one of the simplest flow configurations for the study of elementary vortex interactions, which can yield useful information for our understanding of the dynamics of more complex transitional and also turbulent flows.
