Abstract
The present paper investigates the stabilization of compressor surge using an active method. An active element such as a damper is introduced to the compression system for increasing the surge margin. A movable plenum wall, driven by a signal proportional to the unsteady plenum pressure was used, to suppress the surge in the centrifugal compressors. Time variation of pressure and flow rate as well as so called surge cycle were mapped and discussed at different flow conditions and at different values of B-parameter. Effect of B-parameter on compression system stability is also discussed. The results of these analysis show that, using a damper as a controller with the plenum of the compression system (movable plenum wall) has reduced the surge flow coefficient of the compression system by about 12 % compared to the surge flow coefficient with the rigid plenum wall. The results of the present work showed a good agreement when compared with the theoretical and experimental work of Ffowcs and Huang [1].
