Abstract

The AFM [1–4] allows to control small micromanufactured tips with a precision of fractions of Ångströms at a force sensitivity of piconewtons. It is therefore natural to combine nanotechnology and life sciences to investigate the mechanical properties of individual biomolecules [5–12]. Here we report recordings of force extension curves of polysaccharides and polyaminoacids.
