Abstract

We have studied experimentally and theoretically the microscopic origin of coercivity in in-plane magnetised Cr/Ag/Fe(4–13ML)/Ag/Fe/GaAs(001) epitaxial films. By measuring hysteresis loops at different temperatures, we were able to deduce the maximum pinning pressure which sample defects were able to exert on domain walls (DW’s) as a function of temperature. Time resolved MOKE microscopy showed that the pinning defects were spatially distributed on a very short length scale (<1μm).
