Abstract

Competition experiments between two clones of the hybrid D. galeata × hyalina differing in vertical migration behaviour were carried out in the laboratory, in a set-up which separated the clones spatially. The influence of fish kairomones artificial predation and the imitation of diel vertical migration circumstances were investigated. In the presence of fish kairomones, the non-migrating clone outnumbered the migrating one. The introduction of artificial predation reduced this effect in such a way that the migrating clone had a competitive advantage over the non-migrating clone. It was concluded that competition results do not contradict life history studies performed with the same two clones, since the presence of fish kairomones enhances the reproduction of the non-migrating clone more than that of the migrating one.
