Abstract

Our progress in studies of large-scale structure and other areas of observational cosmology is punctuated by the construction of new telescopes and the development of more powerful instruments. I describe here current and future CfA surveys against the backdrop of the instruments that make them possible. The CfA’s instrumental capabilities will shortly undergo a dramatic change. Current CfA surveys are largely carried out on 1.5m class telescopes where the spectra are collected individually. In about one year, the converted MMT will be brought into operation with a 6.5 m primary and a spectrograph (fed by optical fibers) that will collect 300 spectra simultaneously in a 1° diameter field.
