The Galaxy Luminosity Function at Redshift Zero: Constraints on Galaxy Formation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 231))

Abstract

The luminosity function (LF) of low-redshift galaxies is a primary benchmark for models of galaxy formation. The detailed shape of the LF reflects a host of physical processes ranging from the collapse of dark-matter halos to the complex cycle of gas cooling, star formation, and feedback into the interstellar medium. Additional observables such as morphology, color, and emission-line strength provide similar but independent constraints on the input physics. Along with dynamical measures of galaxy masses, the LF and its dependence on morphology, color and emission-line strength anchor the theory of galaxy formation at redshift zero.
