Large-Scale Structure and the Nearby Universe

The Evolving Universe

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 231))

Abstract

We review recent results obtained from nearby redshift and redshift-distance surveys to argue the importance of studies of the local universe to our understanding of structure formation and evolution. In particular, data from dense and complete spectroscopic surveys combined with data from peculiar-velocity measurements may play a key role for understanding galaxy biasing. Significant progress on this front may soon become possible using 4-m class telescopes.
