Abstract

Recent molecular systematic analyses of natural populations have confirmed longheld suspicions about the high taxonomic diversity of marine bacterial communities. The emerging consensus of these studies is that microbial populations in the sea are highly dynamic, complex assemblages drawn from hitherto undescribed, as well as more familiar, phylogenetic groups. The ecological implications of this modern view are clear: natural communities of marine bacteria display a rich assortment of likely physiological attributes, only some of which are expressed by those individuals held in existing culture collections.
