Abstract

Compared with the traditional application of microorganisms for useful purposes, the industrial application of cell culture is a recent innovation. The cultivation of animal tissue in vitro was achieved early in the 1900s, but reproducible and reliable large-scale cell culture has been achieved only in recent years [1]. However, this relatively new technology now represents an important element of industrial biotechnology (Chapter 8).
