A phylogeny of recent and fossil Crustacea derived from morphological characters

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: The Systematics Association Special Volume Series ((SASS,volume 55))

Abstract

Crustaceans exhibit enormous diversity and morphological plasticity, having evolved many distinctive morphotypes with many heteronomous character combinations since their origination in the Cambrian (Schram, 1982; Briggs, 1992). The high level of parallelism, convergence and reversals amongst the crustaceans reflects that among the arthropods in general (Schram, 1978). Their morphological flexibility is largely due to the segmented nature of the body and serially homologous appendages, giving enormous opportunity for evolutionary specialization. Nevertheless, there are certain constraints within the Crustacea on what can be a viable, functioning arrangement of parts, and there is often a gross similarity of form and function in similar habitat types (e.g. mystacocarids, bathynellaceans and ingolfiellan amphipods in interstitial habitats).
