Summary
During the last 2, 5 years 7 senior medical students of the University of Maastricht (The Netherlands) spent an elective period of Family Medicine on different locations in Canada. Among students, there is an increasing demand for this experimental elective. We hypothesized that the elective contributes to the development of an open-minded and critical physician.
As a start to evaluate and eventually to modify the program, we decided to interview the students who already participated and those who intend to participate. Furthermore, we contacted the coordinators in Canada by a mailed questionnaire. Inquiries were made about organisational aspects, satisfaction and the students’ motivations to do this elective. Suggestions how to improve the elective were gathered.
We conclude that the elective has clear educational benefits reaching beyond gain of factual medical knowledge. The program is highly valued by the students and encouraged by the Canadian coordinators. Bilateral exchange would be appreciated.
