Abstract
In the last few years there has been an increasing interest in organisms thriving at extreme environmental conditions, which have been termed extremophiles. They include mainly prokaryotes which survive at extreme high or low temperature, high salinity, high hydrostatic pressure and extreme acidic or alkaline pH. The interest in extremophiles stems not only from the keen desire to discover mechanisms of adaptation to extreme environments but also from practical considerations. Extremophiles prove to be a valuable source of unusual enzymes and chemicals for scientific, medical and industrial applications (Adams and Kelly, 1995; Pennisi, 1997).
