Studies on Wild Barley, Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch at the Scottish Crop Research Institute

  • Chapter
Evolutionary Theory and Processes: Modern Perspectives

Abstract

Barley is a model species at the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) for studies in genetics, physiology, ecology and breeding. Wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch is a key resource in these studies. The work on wild barley at SCRI is reviewed. The starting position has been to select wild barleys from collections made in the centre of diversity, the Middle East Fertile Crescent, to genetically fingerprint the lines and to search for associations between genetic markers and adaptation to environmental stresses. This has been done with respect to site-of-origin ecogeographic data and experimentally imposed stresses. The exploitation of mapped genetic markers associated with these variables is described in what is a multidisciplinary effort in understanding the genetics of adaptation. The interactions with, and implications for, physiology, ecology and breeding are discussed.
