Abstract

Projecting the development of a regional timber resource in response to a given series of periodic harvest levels is an essential prerequisite for wood procurement planning and forest sector modelling. A forest region is characterized by age class distributions, average yield classes and sometimes average degrees of stocking within age classes, for different tree species. The per-ha standing volume of the timber resource may be estimated for a given age, and this information forms the basis for regional resource projections assuming different harvest scenarios.

Notes

  1. The adjectives monocyclic and policyclic, which are sometimes used to distinguish between a cyclic forest and a continuous cover forest, are misleading. Policyclic development is not only found in continuous cover forests, but also in thinned cyclic forests.
