Abstract

This paper provides a general review of what is known about the composition of the interstellar dust and how we know it. Several general methods are cited, but the emphasis here is on the measurement of interstellar gas-phase depletions and the inferences drawn from them about the dust. Depletion estimates are derived from measurements of gas-phase abundances, and the first major section of the review describes the methods for determining the composition of the gas in diffuse and translucent interstellar clouds. Following this is a review of depletion results, including a discussion of the so-called ‘standard’ depletion pattern. Evidence favoring a revision of the assumed reference standard (the ‘cosmic’ abundances) is then reviewed, along with the implications for models of the dust. Next the dependences of depletions on various environmental factors (cloud velocity, density, and extinction properties) are summarized. Finally, future work in this field is outlined.
