Abstract
Conventional U-Pb systematics in zircon and single zircon Pb-evaporation methods were used to determine the age of the igneous protolith of the basement orthogneisses that occur in the core of several dome like structures in the northern segment of the Araguaia belt, Brazil. These studies were carried out to understand the stratigraphic relationship among the different gneisses, and to constrain interpretations concerning the age of the structural development of Araguaia belt, as well as its relationship with the adjacent Amazonian Craton. The zircon ages indicate that these basement gneisses are composed of Archean (2.86 – 2.87 Ga) and Early Proterozoic (1.86 Ga) rocks. The geological relationship outlined is that of Archean TTG’s intruded by Early Proterozoic granitic rocks. Later, these rocks were deformed and metamorphosed during the structural development of the Araguaia belt, which is related to the Brasiliano/Pan-African cycle. The presence of rocks of a similar geologic association of the same age in the adjacent Amazonian craton, along with previous structural and geophysical interpretations, suggests that the basement rocks of the northern segment of the Araguaia Belt may in fact, represent inliers of the Amazonian Craton in this belt.
