Asia-Pacific Forests, Societies and Environments

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: World Forests ((WFSE,volume 1))

Abstract

The Asia-Pacific region, including also Australia and New Zealand (Map 18.1), is home to more than half of the world’s population, although the region covers only about one quarter of the world’s land area (China and the Russian Federation are dealt with in detail in Part VI of this Volume). The total land area of Asia-Pacific is 27% of the world total (FAO 1997). The climate of Asia is largely influenced by monsoon weather and a range of mountains including the famous Himalayas.
