Abstract
Population dynamics are still largely determined by long-term trends in fertility, despite the growing importance of (net) migration in many European countries in recent decades. The development of fertility has shown drastic changes since the Second World War. Fertility levels were initially well above replacement level, generally surpassing pre-war levels. This led to the post-war baby boom.
