Abstract

The most commonly used spectral lines for studying molecular gas in external galaxies are those of CO. Since CO is easily excited, it traces essentially all of the molecular gas in a galaxy. CO has been used to measure the molecular gas mass, the distribution of molecular gas, the kinematics in nuclei and spiral arms, and the physical condition of the molecular ISM in galaxies. This lecture reviews the major results of extragalactic CO research.
