Abstract
There are several ways of marking the stages in a scientist’s life:
-
as a young student one is invited to present one’s ideas to ones close associates.
-
as an older student one is allowed (after extensive vetting) to present a 10 minute “contributed” paper to a society meeting
-
as one’s work is recognized meeting organizers invite one to give a 30 minute presentation of important work
-
in due course as one becomes the world expert in a field one is invited to give a “keynote” speech at the start of a conference or a summary or “rapporteur” talk at the end.
-
after that life goes downhill. Eventually, all one can do is give an after dinner talk!
