Gamma Ray Exposure Due to Sources in the Contaminated Forest

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((ASEN2,volume 58))

Abstract

A contaminated forest can contribute significantly to human exposure for a few decades after the initial contamination. The general strategy for modelling external exposure of people in a contaminated forest includes the solution of two main tasks:

  • the development of an ecological model for the migration of the relevant radionuclides in evaluating of their content in various components of the forest ecosystems. This applies at times after the radioactive fallout which occurred according to the given scenario of the accident;

  • the development of a calculational model for evaluating the kerma rate in air and the effective dose rate to people, at various tames from the external gamma radiation field in the contaminated forest. This applies to the given distribution of activity in the various compartments.
