Abstract
As the National Health Service (NHS) celebrates its 50th birthday and, incidentally, the appointment of the first professional librarian to the Ministry of Health, a series of Government Papers signal important developments in health care in the UK. Librarians are poised on the threshold of an expanding need for high quality, evidence based information with new roles and new skills required if they are to deliver the new NHS.
