Abstract

The simulation of three-dimensional organized coherent structures in the wake of a circular cylinder is a topic of major interest in the domain of fundamental research, concerning the transition to turbulence. In the last five years, a few numerical simulations of the tree-dimensional wake structure appeared in the literature. Rivet (1991) has simulated by a lattice-gaz method the oblique shedding pattern in the wake of a cylinder at Re = 74. This pattern has been found in accordance with the experimental studies of Gerrard (1966) and Williamson (1988). Karniadakis & Triantafyllou (1992) have simulated by a spectral-element Navier Stokes solver, Patera (1984) the three-dimensional flow around a cylinder at Reynolds numbers 200 – 550 range. However, this study has not reported distorsion of the main vortex rows in the third direction.
