Abstract

Unsteady flow fields of a model helicopter rotor are studied by direct numerical simulations of the three-dimensional, compressible Euler equations. “Vortex ring state” is captured numerically for the case of a descent velocity close to the average downward velocity in hover, and the existence of a vortex ring in this state is confirmed. The vorticity of the vortex ring is found to be supplied by tip vortices. The aerodynamic characteristics are in good qualitative agreements with experiments.
