Abstract
Photo-oxidants in the troposphere over Europe, with as main trace gas ozone, have been studied extensively over the last three decades. The key scientific question is the understanding of the processes which govern the photo-oxidant formation. The determination of these processes is also of policy relevance; ozone levels over Europe exceed regularly limit values. This fact requires the determination of abatement strategies to reduce ozone concentration. Such an abatement can only be effective, and cost-effective, in case the reasons for these high ozone levels are known, also in a quantitative way.
