Abstract
Most discussions of literacy in this volume focus on standard official languages in general and English, in particular. This emphasis disguises the astonishing diversity of local literacies throughout the world. There is often an assumption that the move towards standardization is a necessary condition for development and the spread of literacy. However, such assumptions need to be scrutinised most carefully.
