Language Policy in Teacher Education

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Language and Education ((LANG,volume 1))

Abstract

Ever since educating every child became a public responsibility, language policy in teacher education became the order of the day. From this point on, several decisions needed to be made. The first issue concerned the language which children were to be taught to read and write as well as receive instruction. The second point requiring clarification was whether children should study another language (or languages) in school besides the language of instruction. And the third question to be decided upon was what children should learn about language and languages in general: about the value, cultivation, importance, prestige, etc. of one’s own and of other languages.
