Abstract
A combination of interdisciplinary research traditions intersect in the present review. Language scholars who study race and social class have been intellectually cut off from most linguistic studies of language acquisition, but the relationship between these topics is made explicit in this review. The discussion begins with a brief survey of early research in the respective fields, and readers should likewise consult other reviews within this volume regarding related topics (see, for example, reviews by Chen, Doğançsy-Aktuna, Bortoni-Ricardo, Goldstein, May and Norton).
