Abstract
Marx (1867/1978) presents “the commodity” as the organizing principle of capitalist society. This review describes research on classroom discourse which shows that — although classroom language use seems removed from the marketplace — verbal practice in schools is often commodified. A clearer understanding of Marx’ concept can help us better understand language use in contemporary schools, and how schools fit into the social system.
