Abstract
The term classroom interaction as used in this review covers all forms of interaction that take place in the classroom, both verbal and non-verbal. The dimensions of classroom interaction that will be discussed include the language used by the teacher and the learners, the interaction generated between the teacher and the learners, and among the learners themselves, and the effects of the interaction on opportunities for teaching and learning. They constitute the observables of classroom interaction. The discussion will also include the underlying factors which have a critical role to play in shaping classroom interaction. They include the socio-cultural background of the teacher and the learners, their psychological state, their beliefs about teaching and learning, and the context of interaction. They constitute the unobservables of classroom interaction.
