Abstract

The Saami are one people inhabiting four different states: Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. In effect several Saami languages are spoken, as variance among Saami dialects is considerable. Furthermore, the linguistic boundaries do not coincide with national borders. It is difficult to enumerate the Saami population because significant assimilation has occurred. The census of 1970 estimated a total of 40,000 Saamis in Norway, and analyses conclude that there has been an abnormal demographic trend in the period covered by the censuses. This review focuses primarily on the situation within education in Norway.
