Abstract

Compressible fluid flow is an important branch of fluid dynamics but it is seldom given extensive coverage in university courses. This is especially true of the viscous aspects, i.e. modelling of laminar and turbulent boundary layer flows as well as the important area of transition to turbulence. It is clear that one of the major applications for such knowledge is the aerodynamics of high speed aircraft, both sub and supersonic, as well as spacecraft. However large effects of compressibility on boundary layer flows also occur in other areas of engineering, for instance in various gas turbine applications. Combustion is another area where varying density and composition make physical modelling a difficult task.
