Abstract
From at least the newborn onwards, infants spend a large part of time in a few, easily detectable different behavioural states (Wolff, 1987), which are expressions of the coordinating capacities of the brain (Prechtl, 1974). It was often remarked that behavioural states are important for transactions with the environment.
