Abstract

The mercury uptake from aqueous solutions by a mordenite rich tuff from Samos island, Greece, was studied as a function of ionic strength at an initial pH of 5.0±0.2, using 203Hg as a radiotracer. The total mercury concentration was varied from 5.0×10-4 to 5.0×l0-7 mol L-1. The adsorption was described quantitatively by fitting the data to a Langmuir isotherm, while the estimated K d values ranged from 950 to 1600 mL g-1. The dependence of mercury adsorption on the solution ionic strength, suggested a predominantly electrostatic interaction of the adsorbate with the mineral surface.
