Abstract
In situ measurements of the Solar Wind in the interplanetary medium (e.g., reviews by C. Parnell and J-L. Bertaux in this volume) and observations covering almost all stellar types (e.g., reviews by T. Lago, H. Zinnecker and M. Smith in this volume) provide evidence that the external atmospheric layers of stars are accelerated to tens, hundreds, or, thousands of kilometers per second (with even higher speeds in compact stellar objects and AGN). Thus, plasma outflows seem to provide a link between stellar interiors and the interstellar medium. As such, outflows seem to participate actively to stellar evolution by removing mass, angular momentum and magnetic flux from the central object.
